Mike McNitzky from the Class of '68 passed away on Monday, February 9th, 2009 ...

Every so often I see an obituary that really "hits home." Mike McNitzkey's was one of those that "hit home."

We all hear about those relationships that are the "odd couple"; well, Mike was one of those for me.  Any one that knew me in high school would NEVER guess that I would be one of those geek type people that had good grades.  Not as good as some, but, pretty good I think, ha ha.  Well, I could not bring unacceptable grades home because my Dad (who had a fifth grade education) would take that very personally, and, man, that would be a real bad deal!

I met Mike through a teacher named Bethkey; he was a teacher that taught German and English (go figure).  Anyway, I stayed over in English class with Mr. Bethkey talking to him about my rough times in math.  Well, Mike came in for the next class of German and overheard the conversation. He asked if he could intervene and give me some tips.  Mike was a junior and I was a lowly sophomore.

Mike tutored me in math at the library after school for about a month.

Man, my grades went straight through the roof in math (to say the least).  He did this without any "fan-fare" or grand-standing; he did it just because he could and he made the time for someone he had never met before.

I will never forget that experience.  It's really amazing (more so as time flies) what one remembers.  Mike touched my life in more ways than one.  In fact, I went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in accounting.  So much for having a problem in math.  I always held Mike up as someone to be like - to emulate - to try to be like.

It was really surrealistic and with great sadness when I saw this obituary of such a young, intelligent, and kindly person.

Long Time Educator Bill Hamrick Dies

— Bill Hamrick, a former principal at Ray High School and a former coach at Carroll High School who worked for more than four decades for CCISD, died Monday.

He was 83.

Hamrick’s career as a teacher, coach and administrator spanned 47 years. Hamrick also was a principal at King High School, Wynn Seale Junior High and, for a short period, Flour Bluff. He also has coached football at various schools locally and across the state from 1950 to 1996.

He also served on the school board and volunteered within the community.

“He used to drive cancer patients to and from their doctor’s appointments,” said Kathy Harron, his companion. “He liked to keep himself busy; he didn’t sit still very well.”

Hamrick was a big John Wayne fan who owned all of his movies and would watch them over and over.

Brenda Marshall, athletic director for the Corpus Christi Independent School District, recalled that when Hamrick was principal at Ray High School he had a life-size poster of John Wayne in his office. Hamrick even reminded her of John Wayne, she said.

“It was neat to watch him walk up and down the halls … kind of like John Wayne walking off into the sunset,” she said. “He would always say hi to everybody. He was stern but had a presence that you liked being around him.”

Hamrick also loved to dance, travel and entertain, Harron said.

“When we were dating, we danced six nights a week,” she said.

Harron said Hamrick’s colleagues would often say he was the kind of guy, right or wrong, that would stand behind his friends.

“He always had your back,” she said. “He may have chewed them out later, but he always stood up for his friends.”

Hamrick, a veteran of World War II, served as a U.S. Merchant Marine, and was aboard the first supply ship to Nagasaki, Japan, after the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb.

He graduated from Howard Payne University where he received Little All-America Honors as a football player and is a member of the university’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Other survivors include his sons, Bill D. Hamrick and Jerry Neal Hamrick, a sister, Joyce Hamrick; a brother, Jerry Hamrick; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of Hamrick’s life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Methodist Church.

Bill Hamrick scholarship fund

A scholarship fund has been established at Ray High School in memory of Bill Hamrick, a former principal who died last month. Former and current Ray High School teachers and administrators gathered outside the school Tuesday as a tree was planted in the memory of Bill Hamrick, who served as the school’s principal from 1987 to 1995. He died last month. The live oak was sent to his family rather than the traditional flowers, and longtime friend Florence Jicha decided the school would be the best place to plant it. “He is history at Ray,” she said. “He made us all have pride in Ray.”

Contributions: Make checks payable to Ray High School, and note in the memo that it is for the Hamrick fund. Mail checks to: 1002 Texan Trail, Corpus Christi, TX 78411

We all believed that had he been a contestant on JEOPARDY!, he would have won. Glenn was passionate about his beliefs in social justice and music. Glenn was a talented photographer, a master of the guitar, mandolin, and various other instruments. Glenn is preceded in death by both parents and his son, Walter Glenn Jauer, III.

Memorial for Chris Fox

Feb 21 Sun 10:00 AM
Location

2534 N Austin Ave
Georgetown, TX 78626
1-877-592-796

I have very sad news to report. This past Saturday morning a good friend and fellow biker passed away. Many of you knew Chris Fox as the mellow guy who could answer any question or order any part. Chris worked at Central Texas Power Sports in the parts department and several months ago was diagnosed with Lukemia. He lost his battle early saturday morning. There is no memorial or funeral planned and I think being his extended "family" I feel like we should recognize that this man's life meant something and we all appreciated him.
The place is to be determined so check back for more details but I can say that I would like to have everyone meet at Central Texas Power Sports on Sunday Feb. 21 at 10:00 am and do a bit of a memorial and then ride out to a nearby park to visit with some other family and have refreshments.
On a side note as of right now due to some people thinking only of themselves and being selfish Chris' wife is being left with basically nothing... normally we would set up a fund to donate to the Lukemia society but because of the hardships his wife is going through I would like to set up a memorial fund for his wife, Ming. Chris deserves better than what he got and I think that we need to show Ming (and Chris) we loved and respected this man.
If you ever even visited the parts department new store or old you have met "Fox" and definately if you ever ordered a part you probably ordered it from "Fox".
If you need a picture go to http://www.ctpowerspo... and look at staff pictures.
