Thanks for the thoughts and prayers as all are welcome.  Have not yet decided what to post on the Carroll Message Board and a little bit hesitant.  Thought I might get through this period and then reflect back once I have had time to take a breath.  I do not want my thoughts to be misinterpreted and do not want to say something I would regret influenced by emotion.

It is the peak of Ramadan and we are so busy.  The Insurgents are still shelling the base but no organized attack as of yet.  I thought that once we got to the end of October all this would calm down but Intelligence is saying that once the holiday ends there will be two weeks of celebration in honor of Allah answering Islamic prayers.  Just what we need two more weeks of Crazed Jihadist.

The city, Mosul , is getting Hammered unmercifully.  Multiple car bombs daily in markets, Police Stations, Bizarres, anywhere civilians are gathered.  We sometimes get the wounded.  The insurgents are so trying to start a civil war.

The following is an excerpt from a letter addressing a friends opposition to Bush's decision to invade Iraq ,  I thought you might be interested in a ground zero observation.  Thanks for the Ping .

"It is truly Fall here now as the temps are in the Low 50's and peak at 70.  Truly magnificent weather in this high dry desert.  It is so much like West Texas that I want to go camping.  I don't think the Eucalyptus or the Pine trees will lose their leaves as they don't seem the type.  This is such a unique area.  Here in the Tigres River Valley it is so lush with vegetation and so beautiful with lots of wildlife.  Go a few miles to the East or West and it changes to Desert so abruptly.  Little grows and nothing lives.  Death is so close.  To the East is the former Front line and old battle ground of Iraq 's war with Iran Unbelievable destruction and desolation.  The Iranian border is 89 miles East of my position.  I think the nuclear threat from Iran is equal to are greater than the Terrorist.  The entire Middle East is so volatile.

I understand why Karen as well as many others believe the way they do about the war and it is because they are mislead by the Politically motivated Liberal Media.  They are skewing the information to keep the Republicans in office or get the Democrat elected.  Whatever the motivation, the American public has been misinformed and essentially lied too by all politicians.

President Bush is right, there are many weapons of mass destruction over here, they are called Terrorist.  Jihadist, Al-Qaida, Taliban, Insurgents,  Saddam may not have had WMD's but we don't know that for certain as the military is still searching this country and finding weapons we didn't know that he had.  Why hasn't the media reported on that aspect?  Iraq is as big as Texas with less than half the people, imagine how many places there are to hide weapons.

But to elaborate on the Terrorist.  Look on a map and you will see that Iraq is between Syria and Iran .  Both countries are known to fund, train, and support Terrorism.  Iran created Hezballah, the Party of Allah,  they are the mortal enemy of Israel and America Syria created Hamas, again mortal enemy of the West.  Plus both countries are openly supporting Terrorist operations in Iraq .  They do not want a Democratic country between them.  They want it the way it was with Saddam, A Triad of Terrorist Nations lined up together fighting the West in the name of Islam.

The leaders of these countries are misleading their people the same way the politicians in America are misleading Americans,  it is all about completing their political agendas.  They could care less about Islam but they use it to get their people Fanatically Enraged about religious persecution, so much so that they are willing to Martyr themselves against the great Satan, the U.S.   It's all Bull Shit but it gets their political agenda completed.

Iran and Syria are trying to de-stabilize Iraq by igniting a civil war.  There are Iranian and Syrian death squads working with the Insurgents and they have infiltrated the Shia and Sunni factions which are basically the two political parties, like Democrats and Republicans only much more violent.  The Shias' and Sunnis' are both believers in Islam but interpret the Koran differently and thus the conflict.  The males of the Arab race are very Macho and to have their beliefs in question is a blow to their masculinity, and they settle their differences violently.

The Shia and Sunni death squads snatch large groups of hostages from the streets, markets, bizarres, schools, Mosques, wherever members of the opposing faction are congregating.  These hostages are then tortured horribly and each Squad uses a different method of torture so as to trade mark their work and claim credit.  The victims are then dumped in front of their homes for their families to discover or dumped in a public place for maximum effect.

The Shias use drill motors to drill into the joints, muscles, and eyes of their victims until they die.  They are found riddled with hundreds of holes after it has taken days for them to die.  Sunnis skin their victims alive, ripping their skin off with red hot pliers and burn their eyes out with torches.  Many times each group will take victims of their own faction and torture them using the other group’s techniques so as to cast blame and enrage the public.  And many times large numbers of victims are simply taken out into the desert and shot, just for the Hell of it.

It is common knowledge and females processing into Theater are made aware of a special threat that has been launched against them.  The Insurgents are offering a multi million dollar reward for the capture of any and as many Western females as possible, preferably blonde but not to make a difference as their hair will be dyed blonde by their captors.  They are to be taken to "Rape Rooms” operated by Insurgents where they rape and torture Iraqi men and women.  There the blonde captives are to be gang raped, beaten, tortured to the edge of death, and then be-headed in front of cameras' to be shown on the Al-Jazira Network for the world to see.

Is this not the most despicable, decadent, obscene behavior you have ever heard of?  Ask those that say "Bush lied to us" if they want these Animals loose on the streets of America .  And we all know about car bombs, homicide bombers, IED's.  They do this SHIT to their own people!  Imagine what they will do to us if we pull out of here now and show Weakness!  These Bastards' only understand two things, Strength and Weakness.  To stay and fight is the message We Have To Send!  We are in this war because we pulled out of Vietnam , Somalia , Beirut and the world perceived us as cowards.  Osama Bin Laden said it himself that "Americans are paper Tigers; they have no stomach for war!"  We must stand our ground, reeducate the world and thus declare that “ America will not go quietly into the night.”

It doesn't matter what Bush said.  He could have declared that Martians have landed in Iraq and are threatening to conquer the world or that Giant Earth Eating Dinosaurs were devouring the planet.  It doesn't matter!  Iranian/Syrian sponsored Terrorism is a Weapon of Mass Destruction and we are the target.  Has September 11, 2001 been forgotten back in the states?

It is extremely dangerous to sit back in the states, 9000 miles from the front lines, comfortably watching FOX, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS and listening to what they want you to hear, skewed by sponsors, politicians, family members who don't know SHIT!

But it is quite another to be shelled night/day by the same Bastards who want to import their ideology to America and be told we were lied too by our President.  Lied to about what?  These Sons of Bitches are trying to kill us!  We see their atrocities everyday!  Tell those who claim Bush lied, to come join me at the Front and watch these young Americans stand their ground fighting against the most Horrible Evil ever visited on this planet.  If we pull out now, the Front Line will move to their Front Door!"

I spent ten days in Houston going through deployment processing, what an ordeal that was, I'll never do that again.  I left there September 21, for a 9 hour flight to Amsterdam, Holland.  Six hour lay over and then to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.  Spent 24 hours there, not a pleasant place during Ramadan.  Left there on a Russian transport and landed in Baghdad 0830 Sunday 24.  Spent a week there for training at Camp Victory just on the outskirts of the city.  Day and night car bombs, mortars, rockets, and fire fights.  What a place.  Am I still on the same planet!  These people are trying to kill me just because I'm Christian.

I am now stationed up North at Camp Diamond Back in Mosul Iraq, I work in a medical clinic everyday from 0700 to 1900 and am on call the rest of the time.  It is active here as well, the base is the medievac point for the north.  We are next to the Army hospital and across the street from the runway.  The military flys 24/7 but I get used to it, sort of helps me sleep.

I live in a "Hooch" military slang for living quarters about 50 feet from the clinic.  A small room, air conditioned with my own bathroom, a real plus as everyone else has to walk to a separate shower, bathroom facility, kind of like a big locker room.  The medics are special.  We eat at a DFAC, dining facility, which is open 4 times a day.  Laundry is free, in fact everything is free except stuff you buy at the PX.  There is a movie theater, small, a gym, big, and everything is within walking distance as this is a small base.  It is about 2 x 1 miles, shaped like a box wrapped around the runway, maybe 300 hundred personnel here in support of the Army.  The Army launches convoys into the area to support the Iraqi police and army.  We are in the middle of the city of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, 2.8 million.  In fact the airport that we use was the airport for the city until the coalition forces took over.  There are 36 different nationalities here making up the coalition force.

The clinic has an upper deck that I go up and sit on at night and watch the explosions and fire fights in the city.  Strangely it has a de-stressing, comforting affect.  I guess because I am watching it here and not in America.  The President is right, we must fight the war on terrorism here and not on the streets of America.  Anyone who thinks differently should do a tour of duty over here and it will change their mind.  Thanks for writing, the toughest thing for me is the isolation, not much news from the outside world.  Very few televisions and they are fed by the Armed Forces Network and the military filters the content.

Stay in touch and thanks for writing.

Life is hectic here, the religious holiday of Ramadan is coming to a peak the next 10 days.  The Arabs believe Allah is as close to the Earth as he ever will be all year, so they are praying and fighting with increased violence every day.  We are hit daily with rocket and mortar attacks and the nights are worse.  The Jihadist fast and rest all day in honor of Ramadan and then eat, pray, and fight all night.  Lots of incoming, I lay in my bunk at night and listen to the mortars walk in on us.  Would rather be there than in a cold uncomfortable bunker with a lot of nervous people, crying, praying, screaming, cussing, etc.

The insurgents got lucky in an attack on D5, a camp south of here.  One of the rockets hit the military ammo dump and the ensuing explosion and fire completely destroyed the base.  All personnel had been in bunkers and were evacuated by the military with only that what they were wearing, all else was lost.  Supposedly no casualties, Yea! Right!

Other than that life is good, settling in, developing a routine, seeing patients, same same everyday.  One of the pleasures I have is the Carroll Web Site, reading the message board, obits, pictures.  Back in the world I did not have time for such things, low priority.  Over here the littlest thing has such added significance.  Roger Emmons is quite the writer and has great retention.  I just have so very little recognition of that period.  I envy those that do.  Take care and thanks for the ping.

We got hit hard last night, rocket attack coordinated with fire fights at the east wire at sunset.  Caught a bunch of us out in the open and took casualties.  We worked the wounded until late and I fell asleep as soon as I hit my bunk.  Slept until 0100 and the Fighter coverage woke me.  I have a tension headache, fatigue, and am irritable.  Combat stress that I see in others, must maintain composure.

The base is on Full Alert and the Air Force has a CAP on us for added defense.  Several F-15 Fighter Bombers orbiting the base 24/7 for Combat Air Patrol.  Can't sleep with em, can't Live with out em.

The Insurgents are using the guilty verdict for Saddam and the American election to whip their followers into a frenzy and we are expecting an all out attack.  This base has been nearly overrun in the past and to do so now is their goal so as to achieve a political victory.  They want to sway the election with a successful offensive on the ground.

The Insurgents have done their homework as they fight like the Viet Cong.  They get in close as they attack so that our air cover is useless as it is almost hand to hand and an air strike would kill as many of us as them.  The VC called it "Hanging on to our belt buckle" and the Insurgents do it well.

During the 1968 "Tet New Year" offensive in Viet Nam the VC were able to capture the American Embassy in Saigon.  They only held it for a short time and were eventually wiped out as American Forces re-took the compound, but it gave them a political victory that eventually won the war for them as the American public perceived the war as un-win-able.  The Insurgent's goal is to duplicate that victory by capturing one of our bases.  This one is very lucrative to them as it is an airport, hospital, prison, and medevac port.  Plus we are surrounded by Mosul, so we are a thorn in their side.

And then that idiot Kerry says that all Americans in Iraq are stupid, what kind of Bull Shit is that.  Do people in the states not realize that what is said in the states is taken as gospel by these religious lunatics.  Not only do we have to fight the Bloody Insurgents but we have to fight the American Politicians as well.  If they can't say anything to support the war or OUR Troops, then shut the ....  UP!

Will talk later if possible as communications come and go.

Take care and thanks for the thoughts and prayers as they are well received.

Linda forwarded your request for the names of troops here that would appreciate “goodie-boxes; letters from students.”  I can assure you that any one and all of these young Americans would greatly appreciate anything from the states as life is so harsh here.  They have no amenities as this is a war zone and there is much hardship.

There is an organization here at this base that hand delivers packages from home to soldiers in need.  The organizer is Brad Blauser, a former soldier who did his tour and came back as a civilian to do what he could to support the troops.  The great thing about Brad is that he sees to it that the Care Packages get to the individual troopers.  He hand delivers them, takes pictures, and posts the troops picture on the wed site for the Donors back home to see.  How awesome is that?  The organizations web site is listed below.  Log on and check out the pics, allowable items, and shipping instructions.  I see Brad daily and if you want to coordinate a special picture for your kids with a school banner, flag, or whatever let me know.   Send me a flag, we will fly it over Iraq , take a picture, sign, date it, and send it back.

I can not tell you how proud I am to be here supporting these American Children of War as they support us.

They are addressed as “War Fighters” a name that honors their sacrifice.

After months of shelling we are finally catching a break and being left alone as the war rages around us.  There is still the occasional sniper round, fire fight, and a few free lance mortar teams probing us trying to get lucky, but for the most part we are now spectators as the ferocity of the fighting is with out parallel.  The Insurgents are answering the Democratic victories in America with incredible violence directed at the Iraqi people.

The car bombing is most gruesome as the Insurgents target weddings, funerals, mosques, schools, markets, anywhere large numbers of innocent people are gathered.  And the Iraqi Army and Police are paying a horrific price for their patriotism as Police stations, Check Points, and Recruit Training Centers are annihilated by truck bombs.  VBED, vehicle bourn explosive device, is the term now used to describe the next generation of horror.  Garbage trucks, gasoline carriers, buses are packed with explosives and driven into targets and detonated, the resulting explosions are off the scale.  The VBED is the primary weapon of choice and intended to cause as much carnage as possible to draw in first responders.  After adequate numbers of Army, Police, and Ambulance personnel are on scene a secondary device is detonated, either another VBED or a walk-on homicide bomber.  The idea is to eliminate as many Emergency Response Personnel as possible and paralyze the Iraqi public with fear.  There is sometimes a third or tertiary device from yet another source.  The psychological effect is staggering, would be rescuers/responders are now running away from the scene instead of to the initial victims who lay there, suffer, and die horribly.

The Iranian and Syrian puppet masters have successfully manipulated their minions into the Shiite and Sunni factions with the sectarian fighting now raging out in the open.  In the past the factional death squads would perform their gruesome work under the cover of darkness, with mutilated victims quietly dumped in public settings.  There are now running gun battles as the opposing factions square off with open, public fire fights and innocent Iraqis are caught in the cross fire.  As the Iraqi Army and Police attempt to intervene they are turned on by Insurgents imbedded on both sides and suffer horribly.  The wounded are taken to local hospitals and we get the overflow.

There is much debate on whether this situation has deteriorated into a civil war or just increased sectarian violence.  Let’s see.  Shiite, Sunni, and Kurds are openly shooting each other on the streets of major cities Baghdad , Fallujah, Ramadi, and Mosul .  Factional Death Squads openly kill or kidnap large numbers of prominent Iraqis.  The Insurgents are systematically murdering the only indigenous law enforcement capable of containing the anarchy and American deaths are approaching 3000.  If this is not a civil war then the definition must be modified.
